In the name of Allah the Most Gracious and the Most Merciful
Did you know that plastics can seriously threaten your well-being?
Seriously? PLASTICS??
Well, apparently Israel seriously feels that way.
It has been more than 2 weeks since The Spirit of Rachel Corrie or officially called MV Finch set sail from Greece on May 11, carrying 7.5km PVC pipes, 5 crew members (3 Malaysians and 2 Indians) and seven activists (4 Malaysians, 2 Irish and 1 Canadian). The pipes are meant to restore the sewerage system in Gaza which was destroyed during the attacks by Israel in 2006.
Upon reaching the waters of Gaza, they were attacked by Israeli forces. Fortunately, there were no casualties.
From what I read from the news, the team has two options. One is to transport the cargo (pipes) through Israeli inspection, while the other is via Egypt through Rafah (by land). Of course, it was an easy decision-making, as everyone knows there is no way any goods, even when it is obviously harmless and solely for the purpose of reviving human's livelihoods, will reach Gaza in a good and usable condition it was first brought in, when required to undergo Israeli screening. If it reaches Gaza at all.
Sadly though, ever since May 16, when the team were promised by the Egyptian government to be able to berth at El-Arish Port, they have not been able to do so. So, they were effectively stuck at sea on board the Spirit of Rachel Corrie, with diminishing food and fresh water supplies as the days crept by. At one point, the mission's leader, Matthias Chang even refused to eat as a sign of protest for not allowing the mission to continue smoothly. Truly, the team was hanging on with the spirit of Rachel Corrie, who was crushed by a bull-dozer when she stood in front of it to prevent it from demolishing a Palestinian home.
You know, all this fuss to stop one ship carrying 7.5km plastic pipes just showed me one thing; that Israel is desperate. I don't actually know how to express the term "desperate" here. Because I don't feel that they are desperate like a nation struck by poverty, or famine, or even a plague. They are not desperate because something or someone is actually threatening them. They are desperate to stop any means that can revive their 'enemy', therefore they will stop at nothing to ensure this does not happen, if never.
Stalling the Spirit of Rachel Corrie and its crew of your average Joe just proves Israel believes one fact; that plastics threaten their national security.
Beware! Plastics can kill you!
At least, that's what Israel's message is to the world.
